Passionate about nursing? This project is for you! Enhance your resume and gain invaluable insights for your healthcare career.  Let us know your interests, and we’ll tailor your internship accordingly.  Want a broader experience? Rotate through various departments – the longer your stay, the more opportunities open up.

You will have the opportunity to observe patient care alongside a doctor or nurse in one of the oldest and largest hospitals, Kandy, Sri Lanka. The collapse of the Kandyan Kingdom in 1815 marked the introduction of Western (English) Medicine and the establishment of hospitals across the island. Dr. John Davy, an army surgeon and physician to Governor Sir Robert Brownrigg from 1817 to 1819, played a pivotal role in this development. Arriving in Kandy with the British Troops, he resided near Diyawadana Nilame on Malabar Street, now known as Anagarika Dharmapala Mawatha. A Military Hospital was established by renovating an existing building, situated at the present site of the “Kandyan Art Association,” initially serving both military and civilian populations, particularly for diseases like Cholera and Smallpox.

Teaching Hospital Kandy, closely affiliated with the University of Peradeniya, conducts undergraduate training programs for students enrolled in Medicine at the university and the PostGraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM), a national institute associated with the University of Colombo. The hospital, being one of the oldest with comprehensive medical and surgical specialties, is regularly appointed by PGIM to accommodate post-graduate trainees, registrars, and senior registrars. Furthermore, Teaching Hospital Kandy serves as a training center for student nurses from the Hospital’s Nurses Training School and offers teaching facilities for international students interested in gaining exposure to Tropical Diseases. With a capacity of over 2200 beds, this project provides an opportunity for participants to observe and monitor patients, treatments, techniques, and more, alongside the local staff at the hospital.

This internship aims to provide hands-on learning and a deep understanding of healthcare practices for passionate individuals. Interns will gain exposure to diverse treatment methods used in Sri Lanka, broadening their knowledge and fostering a global perspective on patient care. The program offers opportunities to develop practical skills, explore different healthcare specializations, and gain valuable insights for future career paths.
